Manik x Kiks TYO Skateboard Decks, Cool Advertising!

Seattle based Manik got together with Kiks TYO from Tokyo to collaborate on a couple of skateboard decks. As usual the brand makes use of girls and sneakers, also for this project, and just like on t-shirts, the formula seems to work well on skateboard decks. We give you a preview of two of the collaborative decks, with possibly more on the way.

First timepiece to be worn on the fingernail

You can find the influence of technology almost everywhere these days. And timepieces are not an exception to this rule, which is something no one can deny. The concept of time was intensely debated and modified in the past, being taken to a level that we wouldn’t have expected.

You’ve had the chance to wear a timepiece wrapped around your wrist, as most people usually do, worn as a necklace, as a fashionable ring and so on. But you’ve all reached that point when time is at your fingertip. Or at your fingernail. And I’m not in the mood for making stupid jokes, so that you know.

The information showed on the display includes the time, the date and an AM/PM indicator that the user can see in a very clear format. During the nights, on the other hand, each design was created to light up in a different color. The only thing you need to do is to just press the fingernail watch.

Fishbone, the best USB hub for cartoon lovers

Just like the name suggests, the device is shaped precisely like a fishbone, being designed to look very stylish on anyone’s desk. The hub is provided with 4 USB ports, allowing the user to plug in his / her favorite gadgets into it. A great thing about it consists of the fact that it doesn’t restrain you as far as the size of the gadgets is concerned, leaving, will all four of them being used, enough free space.
Now, as for the features, they include: USB 2.0 high speed 4 port hub, hot-swappable Plug & Play connection and a blue LED indicator. Measuring 90 x 44.5 x 14 millimeters and weighing approximately 25 grams, the weird shaped hub is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, ME and 2000.
If you’re interested in the best USB hub (best looking, maybe), maybe you should try the Fishbone Hub, which is available for no more than $10 from USB Geek. If it doesn’t prove to be the best, it will at least drive you kitty crazy, keeping the little creature busy while working on your important projects.

Problems with Crystal Castles, Via Chris Limitbreak

From 8bitpeoples.com

CREATIVE COMMONS AND CHIP MUSIC THEFT

It's recently come to light that Crystal Castles, a Toronto-based band, has been heavily sampling music from several chip music artists without obtaining permission or crediting them. Lo-bat's tracks Bibibi and Tizzy, from his 8bitpeoples release Game Boy, are just two instances of this.

As you may have noticed, we release all our music under a
Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License here at 8bitpeoples. What this means is that you're free to share it however you like, with whomever you like. All we ask in return is that you credit it appropriately, do not use it for any commercial purposes, and obtain permission before creating any derivative works (such as remixing it or using it as the soundtrack for a video). Crystal Castles has violated every term of this license in their use of Lo-Bat's music. Furthermore, they have committed copyright infringement by sampling other artists such as Covox, whose drums from his song Sunday appear in no less than four Crystal Castles songs.

For more information on Crystal Castles questionable musical approach, the rising trend of chip music plagiarism, and the Creative Commons take a look at these articles:

Yummm, Cupcake Hamburgers!!!!

Somebody went and made a batch of cupcakes that look like hamburgers. I think their maker did a great job, don't you? Because you'll be meeting yours if you disagree. Yeah, that was a threat. No, not a treat, a threat. I'll kill you, yo. I mean it.

These are vanilla cupcakes with a chocolate cuppie in between, green coconut for the lettuce and frosting for the mustard and ketchup. Yum!

Mmmm, cupcake sliders. Everyone here does know what a slider is right? It's a mini-burger. Yeah, they're called sliders because they're small enough to slide down your gullet without much chewing. Not unlike myself. Which....did you just hear that? It sounded like ten thousand women and a handful of gay men fainting simultaneously.

Eastpak x Edbanger Records Collection

Later this year Eastpak will be releasing their latest collaborative project with French electro label Edbanger Records. Edbanger art director So_Me chose two of the most popular styles from Eastpack, the Padded Pack’r” and the “Delegate” messenger bag and gave it the Edbanger touch. Both bags come in two colorways, featuring a So_Me all-over design - silver grey/black and purple/black.

All bags feature a special cut-out Emaille-Pin on the inside. Hidden, the pins have to be cut out of an interior pocket and feature a special registration code, with which you can then download special collaborative content from Eastpak and Edbanger Records.

Look out for a release of the Eastpak x Edbanger Records Collection around October 2009.

Split Box Shelving

The “Split Boxes” by Peter Marigold, a London based designer, might not look like one of the sleekest storage spaces around, however, it presents a simple yet innovative geometry of design that promises to give an interestingly unique look to your home or office storage. Carve out of a single piece of wood split into four creating the total angle of 360 degrees, though not perfectly calculated, the boxes are available in multiple woods and plywood finish with stainless fasteners. No matter if you interchange the angles of a particular box, it’ll will always form a whole. Moreover, you may add/stack or remove boxes from the storage space according to your needs and availability of space, while playing with your creative instincts.

If you dig Pandora, Livio Rock is for you

Livio Radio, which was especially designed for the Pandora, a web-based service. As I said, Pandora is a free site that gives its users the chance to pick their favorite music and then it plays back similar tunes. More than that, the Livio Radio lets you appreciate the music you’re listening to with thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons, which is pretty much like the real Pandora site. This way, you can let the device know what your preferences are.
The Livio Radio costs $150 and you can connect it to Ethernet or Wi-Fi. This is the easiest way for you to have at your disposal tons of music that you will most certainly love very much. Another great advantage of the radio is the fact that it comes with a stereo Line Out jack, which means you can connect external speakers to it. Or a subwoofer, if you like.

Festo, a company that doesn't give two shits whether we all die at the hands of robots, is back on their robotic animal kick, this time with robo-penguins. Yeah, and to make matters worsethe tuxedoed bastards can now attack from both sea AND sky. You only need to watch the first 2:00 of the video to see the penguins, then it goes on to showcase a robotic hand and robotic wall. Yeah, you heard me, a robotic wall. I've heard of some pretty sick things in my day, but that might just take the cake. And speaking of which -- which one of you jerkbags ate the last piece?

Barrow House / Andrew Maynard Architects

The Barrow extension appears as an arrangement of timber boxes, each independently rotated and subjected to varying amounts of extruding and manipulating forces. These separate actions result in a variety of shapes, which united, create an interior of differing volumes and organizations, providing an interesting double story addition to this weatherboard house.

Tetris Furniture, ZOMG!

Tetris furniture: it just makes sense. Furniture is blocky, tetrads are blocky, BOOM-SHACKA-SHAKE'N'BAKE -- Tetris furniture.
It's tetradical! Except -- why does that long block have five squares?

Artists Diego Silvério and Helder Filipov have created a beautiful furniture design that uses the Tetris bricks we have all known to both love and hate. The different bricks combined show many different options and ways for gamers to also have a great looking room and profess their utmost love for the original Tetris game.

ZOMG, I want all long pieces! No, wait, squares! And go ahead and throw in some of those L's. Fine, I'll take them all. But for free. Seriously, this is a gun. *PEW PEW* Haha, did I say gun? I meant laser blaster.

Supernova Bathroom Hardware by Dornbracht

The "Supernova" bathroom hardware line from Dornbracht has a fitting name. This contemporary bathroom concept combines futurism with architectural design. The first thing that catches my eye is the stone shape that rises from the ground. This structure harbors the shower though you can see no enclosure in the picture. It was the intent of Sieger Design and architectect Mike Meiré to create an architectural backdrop in the bathroom. Acting as a center piece to the design, the shower rises like a monument from the bathroom floor creating wonderful architectural element. Other inspiration was to create an island effect and place all the water sources in various areas. You can see the sink on the opposite side of the natural rain shower. To the right of the shower seating is the faucet that feeds the tub. Supernova is a unique concept that is really different than most other bathroom hardware lines that are designed to fit flush up against a wall.

EOS phone adapts to personal lifestyle

Envisaging humanistic relationships with mobile phones in the days to come, the Japanese manufacturer Kyocera has come up with a futuristic phone that alters its shape from a clamshell to a wallet or clutch-purse. Dubbed the “EOS,” the folding phone integrates a flexible OLED display surrounded by a soft and semi-rigid polymer casing, healing your haptic senses with the reinforced user experience. Presenting a clean and compact design, the concept phone offers a greater adaptability, of not just form but interaction as well, thanks to the flexible screen that unfolds to divulge the widescreen display. Moreover, the EOS doesn’t require any battery, for the phone breeds energy by translating kinetic energy into an electric charge via an array of nano-scale piezoelectric generators when it comes in physical interaction with the user. The EOS, apart from its refined and sustainable technology, also brags of a clean and sleek design by hiding the keys when not in use.

CRAZYYYY!!! Magnetically levitating sofa

Very much like the Magnetic Floating Bed, the Cloud Sofa is nothing less than a design masterpiece. Designed for ultra comfort and relaxation, the Cloud magnetically levitating sofa is the most amazing sofa concept I’ve ever come across. The magnetic force generated by the base offers support for the verrry soft upper part of the sofa. It would be a great thing to work, relax or powernap on. Unlike the magnetic floating bed, it’s not tethered with any steel cables. The soft cloud-like chaise lounge received an honorable mention at the RELAX furniture design contest.

Dope Shelving!!!!

Drawing inspiration from the design of a comic book speech bubble, designer Oscar Nuñez has come up with an innovative storage that gives an expression to your living space, apart from giving space for your books and other stuff. Named “Shelves Comic,” the expressive furniture comes in two sizes, small measuring 49 w x 30 d x 35 h cm and large measuring 120 w x 30 d x 35 h cm. Designed for the Mexican design brand Fusca, the shelves may not offer much color options to the buyer, but they certainly promises a style statement, while being simple at the same time, to the contemporary apartments.

BEST HALLOWEEN COSTUME EVER!!!!

Helpless Robot Almost Cute

Tweenbots are the brainchild of NYU student Kacie Kinzer and, as much as I hate to say it, are adorable. At least until you try to point it in the right direction and they spray you in the eyes with hydrochloric acid or explodes. Which, I suspect, is being saved for Tweenbot v2.0. Hit the jump for several more pictures, as well as a map and video of it's maiden voyage, on which it took 42 minutes and 29 different people to help the smug little bastard traverse a park. Wow -- I can't even begin to describe how ironic this whole project is. Mostly just because I don't understand irony.

Vanity: fixture for modern bathrooms

Drawing inspiration from rounded shapes, often attributed to baroque, the +OYO, a duet of young designers, Olga Dabrowska and Adam Groch, has popped up with a unique bathtub that promises to confer a glossy look to your bathing place, apart from being comfortable. Dubbed “Vanity,” the bathtub is divided into two different zones that give an offbeat yet original effect to the bathtub. The first zone/part of the bathtub works as single bathtub; while on the other hand, the other portion becomes seat or footrest. The clean lines make this bath a classic yet contemporary fixture that would complement any modern decor.

FRESH!!!! Emerica x Beams x Ed Templeton

Emerica teams up with Japanese retailer Beams and with artist Ed Templeton on a sneaker/t-shirt package. The lace-up sneakers come with black canvas uppers and animal fur patterns. Matching they present the pocket t-shirts, which feature the same animal pattern on the pockets, along graphics by Ed Templeton.

I wish i had this as a kid!!!!

Staircases can be much more than just a means of getting to the next floor. While some designers think of safety and stability before aesthetics, a few dare to create something unique and innovative. An eco-conscious British architect named Alex Michaelis falls in the latter category. Lately, he built his dream home, and one of the major highlights of the home is a slide next to the staircase. He said that everyone in the family was involved in the design and got to say what he or she wanted. For the kids, it meant (what else?) a slide, a climbing wall and a foosball table. The slide complements the limestone staircase when it comes to overall aesthetics and on the other hand, it’s fun for kids to enjoy those speedy falls. For me, the Staircase/Slide combo inside the home is really a great fun thing for kids, but I am sure many parents won’t appreciate the idea.

studio shulab: 'lightpot'

designers kfir schwalb and orit magia of studio shulab have sent us images

it works with the use of LED lighting. 'lightpot' can be placed anywhere in the house and in any light condition.

more cassette tape art

cassette tape culture is always on our radar, as evidenced by our interest in finnish artist sami havia’s old
cassette tape paintings of famous record covers. never satisfied, we have found two more examples of
the vintage medium being used in art. the first is the work of dutch artist ron van der ende, who recently
created a special installation for worm rotterdam. the bas-relief piece named ‘axonometric array’ is made
completely of reclaimed wood and despite its appearance is only a few centimetres deep. our other new
find is a series of portraits by the flickr user iri5 titled ‘ghost in the machine’. each piece consists of an
old cassette tape that’s ribbon has been removed to create a likeness of a well-known musician.
from jimi hendrix to jim morrison, each piece brings the tape’s music to life through the ribbon portrait.

Urano: The Floating Bed by Falegnameria 1946

Bed designs come and go but often take shape from the styles of the past with very little change or unique qualities. The Urano bed from Falegnameria 1946 definitely does not following previous style trends and features a sleek minimalist design suspended like a floating sleeping oasis constructed from thick elements on a burnished steel frame. Designer Leonardo Dainelli's Urano bed ads class to the already stunning collection of purely Italian furniture that Falegnameria 1946 creates with serious style and quality. See the rest of the "elegant shapes with a new but classical design" here.

Cabel Industry / Massimo Mariani

Just out the edge of the town of Empoli, the building is the Cabel headquarters (a company dealing in computer systems for banks), it covers an area of approximately 4.500 square metres and it is incorporated on the local industrial estate.

Partially set into the ground, the building is composed of two extended floors out the ground level and a vault under. Along the main front the facade is protected by a long strip of public landscaping running parallel to the road.

Ekundayo and Joshua Clay “Duality” Exhibition Recap

The show “Duality” opened at Ad Hoc Art in Bushwick last weekend, marking the first East Coast show for a pair of emerging L.A.-based artists: Ekundayo and Joshua Clay.

Ekundayo’s anthropomorphic malformations bear a curious semblance root vegetables such as ginger, potatoes or parsnips. Yet these fiends could just as well be creating themselves despite their gnarled despondency, as they could be unraveling before our eyes; many of them cling to each other or themselves with a childlike tenderness as they alternately writhe and meditate.

If Ekundayo succeeds in balancing careful, tautly-rendered classicism and the stylization of contemporary street art, Clay decidedly leans towards the latter aesthetic. While Ekundayo’s figures are simultaneously fleshy and emaciated, Clay’s women, in particular, are uniformly anemic and doll-like. Indeed, his angular, fanciful variations on warriors– from ninjas and pirates to bears and tigers– appear animated but lack the visceral vitality of Ekundayo’s creatures.

Similarly, the exaggerated sense of mischievousness makes Clay’s work look cartoonish, for better or worse, opposite Ekundayo’s compellingly grotesque bestiary.

Although the title “Duality” captures the contrast only through the vagueness of the term, we can certainly expect great things to come from both artists. The show is well worth the hike out to Bushwick; the gallery is a short block and a half from the Morgan Ave stop on the L train.
